September, October, November 2013
Our September meeting at Jennifer's has been changed to the fourth Thursday, September 26. We will be discussing Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and maybe some Jeannette Walls' memoirs as well (The Glass Castle and/or Half-Broke Horses).
Laurie has the book for October 17. It is The Scavenger's Daughters by Kay Bratt. She says, "It is a great book and a pretty small so hopefully you will have time to get it read...since you will only have 3 weeks."
November will be hosted by Kristen and we will discuss All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot.
That will wrap up 2013!

Author Response!
Michele wrote to Nicole Dickson, author of Casting Off:
Dear Nicole,
I am so thrilled to tell you that our book club,
which has been operating since
1998, is discussing your book tonight at our meeting. So far, all the
input I have
received has been of loving the book.
It made me look at my life and relationships.
It allowed me to cast off some
things in my life. I absolutely have been working on the
judgments I make of
people for the last couple of years. This book certainly captures
that we never know
what others have experienced and being kind is what we all get do. 'A
little child shall
lead them.'
I just loved this book and what it allowed me to
process.
Thanks so much!
Here is Nicole's response:
Hi Michele,
I
wish I could have called in! (oh, maybe it isn't good to crash a book club
:-)).
1998...that
is quite an accomplishment. I suppose there are many good friends in the
group.
I'm honored you found a few things to take
away from the novel. As a writer, it makes all the work that goes into a
story worth it to hear such.
And yes, a little child shall lead
them...yes. That is exactly it! Funny what happens went you really
listen to children. Just saying, my greatest personal
growth
has been while listening to a certain
couple of kids in my life. I wouldn't be who I am without
them.
Thank you for taking the time to send a
note and for walking the island with me. I greatly appreciate
both.
Warmest regards, Michele,
Nicole

Author mistake!
I put the wrong name of the author for next month's book! The Rent Collector is by Camron Wright. You might have a hard time getting a copy from the library as it is quite popular, so make arrangements to find it. It's a great read. We are meeting at Bonnie's to discuss it.
Loved our discussion of Casting Off hosted by Michele!

More Books by C Alan Bradley
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by C Alan Bradley is the first of three mystery novels with the same main character Flavia De Luce. I read the second one The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag and actually liked it better than the first one. I am just beginning the third novel in the series A Red Herring Without Mustard.
If you are unable to get a copy of the first book in time for book club, you might want to read one of the other two. We can discuss them all because the main character is the same.
See you at my house on June 20.

May, June, July...
Thanks, Darlyn, for a great discussion. I LOVED that book and feel that I learned a lot about James Garfield, Alexander Bell, and many others! Good Read!
Lisa is hosting May. We will discuss The Princess Bride by William Goldman. (There is more than one book with that title, so check the author!) Many copies are available on half.com and other sites for 75 cents plus shipping.
I have chosen The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by C. Alan Bradley for our June discussion at my house.
Casting Off by Nicole R. Dickson is July's pick. Michele will host. There is more than one book with this title also! Check the author! [Author has been corrected].
If you have read a book you like, PLEASE leave it in the comments below and all can see. Tell us a little about it, but no spoilers. Happy reading...

April 2013
Darlyn will host April's meeting where we will discuss Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard.
Lisa is scheduled for May and Jolene for June. Stay tuned for the titles...
Update: Lisa's book is Princess Bride by William Goldman. You may have to order it or borrow it. There are lots of them on half.com for 75 cents plus shipping. It's likely you've seen the movie. It's a fun movie, and in my experience, the book is always better!

February Book Club
Thanks, Pam, for a great book and discussion and creative dessert! It was a nice evening!
Karen is hosting our February meeting on Thursday, February 21. She would like to start earlier, so plan on being there by 7:30 PM if you can. We will be discussing the book: I'll Watch the Moon by Ann Tatlock.
Some of you requested information on the website. Here's the thing. I can't program well enough to do much on the website, but I DO know how to add the books to the "Past Reads" list. So you should always be able to go there and see if we have already read a book. Remember that you can sort them by date, alphabetize the titles, alphabetize the authors by clicking on the headings of the chart.

Also, please make comments about books you like or would like to know more about!
